A minimum of 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
