As any significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
