Police mentioned they were notified by a resident who found a vehicle in Hanau smeared with reddish fluid

Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Automobiles, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a statement.

Law enforcement report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then discovered numerous other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi symbols.

Officials state early analysis suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.

Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for information.

A senior official commented the attack made him speechless and had to be addressed promptly.

"This act hits the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the death of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in 2020.
